Myopia

1. Myopia – (Near-sightedness)
Symptoms –

 Blurry vision when looking at distant objects.
 Need to sit closer to the television, movie screen or the front of the classroom.
 Seem to be unaware of distant objects.
 Blink excessively.
 Rub his or her eyes frequently.

In early Myopia or mild/slight difficulty to see the distant objects, Vision of the patient/child can be
improved and, in many cases, up to 6/6 also. Ayurveda Eye Treatments strengthen the ocular tissues
including eye muscles to improve the vision.

In High Myopia, there are chances to develop further Retinal and other complications. In High
Myopes, Ayurveda Treatments strengthen Retinal and other tissues to prevent further
complications.

Hyperopia

Hyperopia – (Farsightedness)
Symptoms —
• Trouble focusing on nearby objects.
• Headaches.
• Blurry vision.
• Eye strain.
• Fatigue or headache after you do a close-up task such as reading.

In Hyperopia, Ayurveda treatments provides strengthening to Eye muscles including zonules and
lens structures also to improve focussing in response to reduce fatigue of Eye muscles.
In Presbyopia or senile hyperopia, if Ayurveda lifestyle and diet is followed, presbyopia can be
delayed.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism
symptoms
• Blurred or distorted vision.
• Eyestrain or discomfort.
• Headaches.

For astigmatism, maximally corneal curvature and corneal tissues are responsible. Ayurveda
Treatments Provides strengthening to Corneal tissues. The rapid progress in Cylindrical power can be
arrested and, in many cases, some amount of cylindrical power can be reduced also with Ayurveda
Eye Treatments.

Uveitis

Uveitis(Anterior, Posterior and Intermediate)

The signs, symptoms and characteristics of Anterior uveitis may include –
• Eye redness.
• Eye pain.
• Light sensitivity.
• Blurred vision.
• Dark, floating spots in your field of vision (floaters)
• Decreased vision.

Posterior uveitis may cause:
Blurred or loss of vision.
Seeing floating objects in your vision.
Sensitivity to light or glare.
Sensation of sparks or flashes of light.
Impaired night vision.
Impaired colour vision.

Intermediate uveitis causes blurred vision and floaters.

Symptoms may develop rapidly and can include:
• Blurred vision.
• Dark, floating spots in the vision (floaters)
• Eye pain.
• Redness of the eye.
• Sensitivity to light (photophobia)

Uveitis causes inflammation in Uveal tissues (Iris, Ciliary body, Choroid) producing all the above
symptoms.

Ayurveda treatments reduce the inflammation in Uveal tissues, thereby reducing the sign and
symptoms of Uveitis and with Regular treatments for a particular period reduce the chances of
recurrences of attacks of Uveitis.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma
Symptoms include –
Mild or moderate Pain in Eyes referring towards head
Progressively decrease in peripheral (side) vision ultimately causing damage in central vision or
Blindness.
Ayurveda Treatments strengthen the angular structures or trabecular structures thereby increasing
outflow of aqueous in response decreasing Eye pressure. Ayurveda strengthen the Ganglion cells
and in response, Optic nerve and Retina also, arresting/stabilising Progressive Glaucomatic Optic
Neuropathy.

Retinal Degenerations

Retinal Degenerations –

a. Retinitis Pigmentosa – It is a genetically planned disease-causing progressive degeneration of
Retina (Retinal Pigmentary Epithelium).
Symptoms-
• Loss of night vision. Night blindness is when you cannot see anything in the dark. …
• Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision. This is known as “tunnel vision.” You may find you
bump into things as you move around. …
• Loss of central vision. Some people also have problems with central vision. …
• Problems with colour vision.

Ayurveda Eye treatments strengthen and nourish Retinal Pigmentary Epithelium and other layers
thereby reducing degeneration of Retina. So, with Ayurveda treatments, the Degeneration in
Retinitis Pigmentosa can be delayed and in Early cases, degeneration can be arrested with
preserving Vision.

b. Macular Degeneration (Juvenile) – It is also a genetically planned disease-causing progressive
degeneration of central Retina or Macula.

Symptoms
• Problems in the central vision that make it difficult to perform activities such as reading
small print or traffic signs or threading a needle.
• Blurred, distorted vision with dark areas.
• Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
• Display of black and grey spots.

Ayurveda Eye treatments strengthen and nourish cone cells, thereby reducing degeneration of
Macula. So, with Ayurveda treatments, the Degeneration in Macula  can be delayed
and in Early cases, degeneration can be arrested with preserving the Central Vision.

c. Age Related Macular Degeneration

symptoms –
• Blurred or “fuzzy” vision.
• Straight lines, such as sentences on a page, appearing wavy or distorted.
• Blurry areas on a printed page.
• Difficulty reading or seeing details in low light levels.
• Extra sensitivity to glare.

It is of two types – Dry and Wet AMD

In Dry AMD, degeneration of macula is progressive without swelling in Macula or Retina and in Wet
AMD, there is oedema(swelling) in Macula also.

With Ayurveda Eye Treatments, the oedema or swelling can be resolved with strengthening of
Macular tissues with improved blood circulation of Macular tissues.
So, with Ayurveda treatments, in AMD, the Progression of degeneration can be delayed or in Early
cases, can be arrested with preserving the Central vision.

d. Retinitis of Prematurity – it develops due to extra supply of Oxygen to the Retinal blood vessels to
save the life of New-born.

Signs and symptoms: –

An infant with severe ROP might develop visible complications, such as nystagmus (abnormal eye
movements) and leukocoria (white pupils).

Ayurveda Treatment improves Blood circulation of Retina and strengthens the Retinal vessels to
prevent them to bleed. The retinal layers also get strengthen with Ayurveda Treatments.
So, with Ayurveda, Further degeneration of Retina can be prevented and in early stages, Vision can
be saved and improved to good extent.

e. Myopic Macular Degeneration

Symptoms
 People with myopic degeneration are at increased risk of a retinal detachment. This will
typically appear as a rapid and major drop in vision, often with a curtain-like appearance
across the visual field.
 Dimness in Central Vision

Ayurveda treatments strengthen the Macular structures and peripheral retina also thereby
preventing the damage in Central vision. So, Ayurveda can delay or prevent Progressive macular
degeneration due to High Myopia.

Other Peripheral Degenerations also can be arrested or improved with Ayurveda Treatments.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy

Symptoms
 Spots or dark strings floating in vision
 Blurred Vision
 Fluctuating Vision
 Impaired colour vision
 Dark or empty areas in vision
 Vision loss

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of Diabetes that causes damage to blood vessels in the retina
leading to compromised blood circulation to Retina leading to Hypoxia and Ischaemia of Retina.
Body or retina in response produces Neovascularisation or growth of New vessels which are fragile
in nature and easily bleeds on Mild strain or jerky movements causing sudden blackout of Vision.

Ayurveda Eye Treatments improves blood circulation of Retina and strengthen the retinal tissues
thereby preventing further Progression of Diabetic Retinopathy resolving Oedema or swelling in
retinal tissues and resolving Haemorrhage in Vitreous and retinal tissues and reduction of further
development of Neovascularisation.

Optic Neuropathies

a. Optic Neuritis – The inflammation in Optic nerve leads to degeneration of Optic nerve.

Symptoms:
 Pain. Most people who develop optic neuritis have eye pain that's worsened by eye
movement. …
 Vision loss in one eye. Most people have at least some temporary reduction in vision, but
the extent of loss varies. …
 Visual field loss. …
 Loss of colour vision. …
 Flashing lights.

Ayurveda eye Treatments reduces inflammation in Optic Nerve and further strengthens the optic
nerve and regular treatments for a Particular period reduces recurrences of Optic neuritis.

b. Optic atrophy – the Degeneration of Optic nerve leads to optic atrophy either it may be
Primary or secondary to trauma, inflammation or any other reason. It may be Partial or
Complete atrophy.

The symptoms of optic atrophy relate to a change in vision, specifically:
 Blurred vision
 Difficulties with peripheral (side) vision.
 Difficulties with colour vision.
 A reduction in sharpness of vision.

Ayurveda Eye Treatments prevent further degeneration of Optic nerve, by strengthening the optic
nerve fibres and it rejuvenate the Ganglion cells and Optic nerve fibres in many cases thereby
relieving all the symptoms and improving quality of vision.

Corneal Diseases

a. Corneal Degeneration and Dystrophy – It is a genetically planned degeneration of collagen
fibres of Cornea making thinning of cornea altering its shape and curvature. The light rays
passing through cornea refract in altered manner thereby distorting the shape of object and
making a blurred vision.

Symptoms
 Watery eyes.
 Dry eyes.
 Glare.
 Sensitivity to light.
 Pain in the eye.
 The feel of something in your eye.
 Corneal erosions.

Ayurveda treatments provides nourishment and strength to collagen fibres of cornea, reducing their
further degeneration and improving almost all symptoms and providing a better and sharper Vision.

b. Keratoconus – it is a genetically planned degeneration of Cornea, thinning and bulging out in
cone shaped.

Symptoms: –
 Blurred or distorted vision.
 Increased sensitivity to bright light and glare, which can cause problems with night driving.
 A need for frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions.
 Sudden worsening or clouding of vision.
Ayurveda treatments Strengthen the collagen fibres of Cornea thereby preventing further
degeneration of Cornea and improving almost all the symptoms of Keratoconus.

c. Corneal Ulcer and abscess – a corneal ulcer uncured, may further progress to deeper
structures of eyes and may have fungal involvement also making it more difficult to treat
and alleviating the symptoms.
Many a times pus accumulates in cornea making a corneal abscess.

Symptoms: –
 redness of the eye.

 severe pain and soreness of the eye.
 the feeling of having something in your eye.
 tearing.
 pus or other discharge.
 blurred vision.
 sensitivity to light.
 swelling of the eyelids.

Ayurveda treatment helps fast recovery of corneal ulcer by reducing inflammation of cornea and
prevents further complications also. Ayurveda has good treatments to combat Fungal infection also.
Even after recovery of ulcer, the good ocular surface can be achieved with Ayurveda.

Dry Eye Disease

Dry Eye Disease – with increasing use of Electronic Gazets, People are developing dry eyes in
majority of population. There is no doubt a role of disturbed lifestyle and food style also.

Symptoms
 A stinging, burning or scratchy sensation in your eyes.
 Stringy mucus in or around your eyes.
 Sensitivity to light.
 Eye redness.
 A sensation of having something in your eyes.
 Difficulty wearing contact lenses.
 Difficulty with night-time driving.
 Watery eyes, which is the body's response to the irritation of dry eyes.

Ayurveda helps to bring down normality in tear-film and reducing the dryness in eyes by providing
good lubrication.

Sjogren Syndrome – in this condition also, the Ocular surface condition can be improved with
improvements in tear secretion and increased quality of tear-film with the help of Ayurveda
Treatments.

Steven Johnson’s Syndrome – Lubrication of the eyes is improved with Ayurveda treatments by
improving the ocular surface structure and increased tear secretion. This condition can be improved
up to 70-80% with Ayurveda.

Amblyopia

Amblyopia –Many children’s vision in one eye remains underdeveloped and unnoticed till they
close one eye for washing the face or doing some single eye work. It may lead to blurred vision in
amblyopic eye and sometimes child may develop squint also.

Symptoms
 An eye that wanders inward or outward.
 Eyes that appear to not work together.
 Poor depth perception.
 Squinting or shutting an eye.
 Head tilting.
 Abnormal results of vision screening tests.

Ayurveda Treatment improves or develops vision in amblyopic eye increasing its focussing and
relieving almost all the symptoms. In Many children, Squint also can be corrected with Ayurveda
Treatments.

Diplopia

Diplopia

The word ‘Diplopia’ means Double Vision.

Diplopia develops due to any muscular disorder or Nervous disorder (mainly Cranial Nerves
supplying the Eye muscles).

Ayurveda improves muscle strength of Eye muscles and Strengthen the Cranial nerves thereby
curing (correcting) the Diplopia or Double Vision.

Ptosis

Ptosis – Drooping of eyelid either partially or completely is called as ‘Ptosis’.

Ptosis occurs due to dysfunction of the muscles (levator palpabrae superioris) that raise the eyelid or
their nerve supply (Superior cervical sympathetic ganglion or 3rd cranial nerve). Ptosis can be caused
by the aponeurosis of the levator muscle, nerve abnormalities, trauma, inflammation or the lesions
of lid or orbit.

Ayurveda treatments Prevent the degeneration of Levator muscle and their nerve supply by
Providing strength to Levator muscle as well as the 3rd nerve supplying to lid and thereby improving
the function of levator muscle and eyelid.
